Introduction

Developing and sustaining a culture of innovation

Innovation is a buzzword that entails concepts of vision, ideas, creativity and improvement of our lives. It is often simplified by the expression “thinking outside of the box”. Academia has been contributing to innovation for a long time through its research agenda, but there is more and more pressure for academia to innovate at the level of education, community services and management as well. Students and the population in general are asking for relevant and quality education, while constraining the cost inherent to this important societal activity. Employers are asking for work-ready graduates that can immediately tackle current and future professional challenges. This requires us to rethink what we are doing and how we are doing it. Innovation can happen as a single event, but it can also become part of an organisation’s culture so that it is systematically engaged in significant and meaningful activities that will allow it to stand above the rest. This workshop aims at exploring how a culture of innovation can be developed and sustained in academia, where traditions are engrained and change is not always an easy endeavour.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the concepts of innovation and culture, and how they interact.
  2. Analyse their organisation and determine what domains would require innovation.
  3. Develop a strategy to gradually influence the behaviours to allow innovation to become part of the culture.
  4. Plan change management activities that will allow the expected cultural evolution towards innovation.
  5. Discuss examples of academic organisations that have relied on a culture of innovation to move forward.
